Meditations & The Merchant of Venice

Personal Project 2025

I bound a copy of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice as Christmas gifts for my brother and sister-in-law respectively. Meditations was typeset exclusively in Signifier by Klim, and The Merchant of Venice was set in both Signifier and Crimson Pro. Both were printed on Stratford drawing paper with endpapers made of Canson ingres.

Each book features a unique style of binding and jacket or sleeve. The Merchant of Venice, a flatback binding with a dust jacket; Meditations, a coptic binding with a paper slipcase. The covering material for both is painted with metallic gold ink.

The blue and gold waves of the cover are meant to reflect to the meditative quality of Marcus Aurelius' writing, and the regal persona from which they stem.

Red is often used in imagery surrounding The Merchant of Venice as a symbol for blood and the law, both of which are central themes in Shakespeare's Play
